Peter Bürger (literary scholar)

Peter Bürger (born December 6, 1936 in Hamburg ; † August 11, 2017 in Berlin ) was a German literary scholar .

Life

Peter Bürger spent his childhood in Hamburg. The father Peter Bürger (1880–1955) was a sculptor, the mother a dancer and gymnastics teacher. After receiving his doctorate in 1959 from the University of Munich and his habilitation in 1970 at the University of Erlangen , he was appointed professor of literature ( Romance studies ) at the University of Bremen in 1971 . In 1998 he retired. In 2006 he received the Carl Friedrich Gauß Medal of the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft “for his special merits in the field of literature, aesthetics and philosophy of modernity”. Bürger was a supporter of Adorno's critical theory . It is one of the classics of art and cultural sociology.

He was married to Christa Bürger (* 1935), from 1973 to 1998 professor at the Institute for German Language and Literature at the University of Frankfurt .
