Peter Bydlinski

Peter Bydlinski (born June 19, 1957 in Graz ) is an Austrian lawyer , full professor at the Institute for Civil Law, Foreign and International Private Law of the Karl-Franzens University Graz and a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Life

He is one of five sons of the legal scholar Franz Bydlinski . After primary school in Bad Honnef am Rhein , Peter Bydlinski attended grammar school in Mödling from 1967 to 1975 . From October 1976 to June 1980 he studied law at the University of Vienna . In 1980 he obtained his master's degree; in the same year he received his doctorate. After completing his judicial practice , on October 1, 1980, he became a university assistant to Helmut Koziol at the Institute for Civil Law at the University of Vienna.

In March 1986, Bydlinski completed his habilitation with Peter Rummel at the University of Linz for civil law and in October 1991 also for commercial , corporate and securities law . From 1987 onwards he took on professorship and research stays at the universities of Graz, Munich, Hamburg and Passau.

On October 1, 1992, he was appointed professor for civil law in connection with commercial and company law as well as legal methodology at the law faculty of the University of Rostock . He was instrumental in building up the institute for banking and business law there; From its inception until its departure, he was its managing director. In the academic year 1997/98 he held the office of dean .

Since October 1, 1999, he has been a full professor at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz at the Institute for Civil Law, Foreign and International Private Law, which he headed from 2005 to 2009. Peter Bydlinski is co-editor of the magazine Österreichisches Bank-Archiv and deputy head of the banking law forum of the Austrian Banking Society. In 2012 he was elected a corresponding member in Germany of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in the historical-philosophical class. In autumn 2015, he started a multi-year project to reform the ABGB, which primarily aims to modernize the language (more than 600 paragraphs have been processed so far).

His twin brother Michael Bydlinski was Professor of Civil Law at the University of Linz for five years and is Senate President of the Supreme Court. His brother Georg Bydlinski is a writer (primarily a children's book author) and his brother Martin Mini Bydlinski is known as a cabaret artist and actor.

Peter Bydlinski is married and has three children.

Peter Bydlinski has written around 370 publications to date. In addition to numerous essays, commentaries and books, he wrote many decision-making and some book reviews. Much of his work deals with banking law issues such as loan security law and questions of damages. In addition, he has prepared around 190 legal opinions on various topics of civil, commercial and company law. His most important publications include:
