Peter Decker (jazz musician)

Peter Decker (born August 28, 1957 in Ottweiler ; † April 8, 2003 in Saarbrücken ) was a German jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , composition ).

Live and act

Decker, who initially worked as an electrician and miner , received clarinet and saxophone lessons at an early age . He attended numerous jazz workshops, including a. by Jamey Aebersold and David Liebman . In the 1980s he founded his first combo "Jazz-tett". At the end of the 1980s he was a founding member of the Saarland jazz quartet "Re-bop" with Christoph Mudrich , Florian Döling and Oliver Strauch , with whom he toured successfully. He also worked (in Oliver Strauch's quartet) with Lee Konitz (album Friend Lee , 1996 at Edition Collage ). In the 1990s he founded the Peter Decker Quartet, which released the album Timanfaya in 2002 and which he operated until his death. During a performance in Saarbrücken, the album Jazz live with Friends (2001) was created with his quartet and August-Wilhelm Scheer . He also played in a duo with Frank Wunsch (posthumous album Taro 2005 on Laika Records ).

After Decker's death, the first commemorative concerts, “The Music of Peter Decker”, were held in cooperation with Saarland Broadcasting in 2003/04 ; In 2010 there were concerts with his compositions and arrangements.

Decker was a lecturer in jazz saxophone at the Saarland University of Music .
