Peter Eskilsson

Peter Eskilsson , also Per Eskilson (born September 28, 1820 in Billeberga , Skåne , † January 29, 1872 in Bärmö near Stockholm ), was a Swedish genre painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

At a young age Eskilsson served as a sergeant in the Götaland Artillery Regiment, then he worked as an accountant for a poor house in Gothenburg . From 1850 to 1853 he studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm . In 1853 he went - like many other aspiring Scandinavian painters - to Düsseldorf , where he stayed until 1859. There he first found a place in the studio of the Norwegian painter Adolph Tidemand . In 1856 his compatriot Bengt Nordenberg gave him private lessons. Eskilsson's ironic and anecdotal descriptions of Swedish folk life in the style of Düsseldorf genre painting earned him the nickname “ Spitzweg Sweden”.
