life and work

Peter Frömmig grew up in Speyer. After an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic and a few years of factory work and assembly, he moved to Cologne in 1965 , where he accepted a job as a draftsman at the Bundespost . Since then he has dealt with literature, theater and art.

As a budding writer, Frommig was promoted early on. His first mentor was the author Rainer Taëni ("Drama nach Brecht"), who teaches at the University of Cologne . In 1968, Frommig received a grant from the Ministry of Culture of North Rhine-Westphalia to visit the Dramatic Workshop in Salzburg , where his play “Confrontations” was premiered. In 1970 a radio play version on Austrian radio (ORF) followed. After moving from Cologne to Salzburg, Frommig worked in the literature and radio play department of the ORF (headed by Rudolf Bayr) from 1969, where his poems and prose texts were first published. The short story “The Trip of the Autostopper X to Da” was his first printed publication in the features section of the Salzburger Nachrichten in 1970 . This was followed by further publications in features and literary magazines, the ORF and the NDR broadcast radio plays. PF attended the International Summer Academy in Salzburg and in 1973 received an annual grant from the Salzburg state government, which also bought pictures from him.

In 1975 Frommig moved to the USA , where he distinguished himself as a visual artist, exhibiting a lot in Idaho and on the west coast. After six years he decided to return to Germany, settled in Freiburg im Breisgau and devoted himself primarily to writing. Encouraged to do so by the production of his radio play “Offene Secrets” (ORF 1986) and by a large work grant from the support group of German writers in Baden-Württemberg. He gained further publicity through publications in literary magazines ("Allmende"), anthologies and broadcasts of his texts on Südwestfunk . The book debut ("In the shadow of noise. Cyclical poems") came in 1988 in Edition Isele . In 1990 Frömmig was awarded an annual scholarship for literature from the Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation . It was presented in 1992 in the NDR's “Evening Studio for New Literature” (Wend Kässens editorial staff).

The author and visual artist has lived and worked in Marbach am Neckar since 1995 . His literary profession continues to include above all poems, stories and essays. As an employee of various magazines, Frömmig has also written numerous articles on art, literature and contemporary history, including features for broadcasting ( SWR ).

2010 World premiere of the play “A line on the middle of the bridge” by Thor Truppel in the Studio Theater Stuttgart based on texts from the works of Peter Frömmig (also co-author). In 2019 he received the Poetry Album neu award for the best poem of the year 2018 from the Society for Contemporary Poetry in Leipzig .
