Peter Gilles (born November 15, 1953 in Cologne ; † March 2, 2017 there ) was a German painter, draftsman and performance artist . At the center of his artistic work is the human being with his existential challenges.

life and work

In 1978, Gilles began producing his works in an actionist manner in front of audiences in galleries, museums and in public spaces. Based on the tradition of happening and action artists , he used his own body as an instrument and tool, also to explore the limits of his own consciousness with extreme means such as pain and oxygen deprivation .

The most important part of his work was his own blood, which was used as a painting medium after professional extraction. Body prints were made: "Autologous blood - autoanthropometries". In the further revision of the anthropometries, black charcoal pencils were used, with which he also made the large-format gestural drawings.

In 1997 he founded the German-Italian art project Lo Spirito del Lago in Stresa together with Birgit Kahle and Giampiero Zanzi.

Gilles lived in Cologne and Stresa.
