history

The Peter Godeffroy was built at the Reiherstieg shipyard and was launched there in 1857 with hull number 21. The owner was the trading house Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & son of the Hamburg businessman Johan Cesar Godeffroy . The sailing ship was named after a member of the Godeffroy family.

The barque brought emigrants to Australia and South Africa . In 1865, on a crossing from Hamburg to Brisbane , the unusually high number of 59 deaths among 284 passengers embarked. This led to an investigation by the immigration authorities in the port of arrival with a subsequent report. Captain Meyer wrote a statement about the incident in the local press.

In 1867 the ship was sold to Prussia and now sailed as Wilhelm under the command of a Captain Smith.
