history

The Peter Godeffroy was built at the Reiherstieg shipyard and was launched there in 1868 with hull number 193. The owner was the trading house Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & son of the Hamburg businessman Johan Cesar Godeffroy . The sailing ship was named after a member of the Godeffroy family.

The barque brought emigrants to Australia and served the export of trade goods to and the import of island products from Polynesia. In October 1880 the barque was sold to Bolten (Hamburg) without this leading to a change in its intended use or its sailing area.

Early map of the Gazelle Peninsula (1879), the details of which were made more precise by measurements taken on board the Peter Godeffroy under the command of Captain HW Wendts

During a stay in the New Britain archipelago from June to August 1878, surveys of northern New Britain ( Gazelle Peninsula ) and the Duke of York Islands were carried out on board the Peter Godeffroy . In the second half of 1886 the barque was shipwrecked off Rossel Island (Louisiaden). The crew continued their journey in the boat and reached Mioko (Duke of York Islands) after seven days. On March 15 and 16, 1889, a hurricane struck the Samoan Islands . The Peter Godeffroy was at anchor at Apia at this point and was destroyed by the effects of the cyclone.
