Peter Grzybek (2011)

Peter Grzybek (born November 22, 1957 in Herne ; † May 29, 2019 in Graz ) was a German linguist, literary and cultural scientist who worked from 1984 to 1992 at the Ruhr University in Bochum and then at the Institute for Slavic Studies at the Karl- Franzens University Graz in Austria taught and researched.

Life

From 1978 to 1984 Peter Grzybek studied Slavic Philology, English and language teaching research at the Ruhr University in Bochum. During his studies he was employed as a student assistant at the University of Bochum and the University / GH Essen . After studying in Yugoslavia, the USA and the USSR, he completed his studies with a Magister Artium in 1984 with the later published work Lechts and Rinks can not change?!? On the neurosemiotics of linguistic communication . From 1984 he was a research associate at the Department of Slavonic Studies at the University of Bochum and received his doctorate here in 1988 with his dissertation, Studies on the Concept of Signs in Soviet Semiotics (Moscow and Tartu School) , published in 1989 , for which he received the prize from the Ruhr University in Bochum. Since 1989 he has been a research assistant there (C1) before moving to the Karl-Franzens-University Graz in Austria in 1992. Here he completed his habilitation in 1994 cumulatively with the writing Slavic Studies on the Semiotics of Folklore and received the Venia docendi for Slavic Literature and Semiotics, in 1998 he was appointed Associate University Professor. From 2004 to 2011 he was head of the Institute for Slavic Studies, where he worked until his death.

Focus of work

In addition to his research and publication activities as well as numerous lectures at conferences and other guest lectures and research stays in various countries, Grzybek has repeatedly worked at various universities abroad; this includes a two-semester guest apprenticeship at the University of Vienna (1993-94), a visiting professorship at the Humboldt University Berlin (1999), a two-semester substitute professor at the University of Salzburg (2000-01) as well as a multi-semester guest apprenticeship at the Kyrill-und- Method University in Trnava (Slovakia) from 2001 to 2004.

In research and teaching, Grzybek was essentially shown in three scientific areas, which also represent his main areas of work:

In the field of semiotics , Grzybek has dealt in particular with general questions of text and cultural semiotics, in the specifically Slavic area with Russian semiotics and the semiotics of the Moscow and Tartu schools. From 1989 to 1997 he was co-editor of Znakolog. An International Yearbook of Slavic Semiotics , member of the international editorial board of Bochum's contributions to semiotics (1985–99) and managing director of the Austrian Society for Semiotics (1996–2010).
In the context of paremiology , he has particularly distinguished himself in the area of proverb research. In addition to numerous works on the theory of the proverb, he is one of the founders of empirical proverb research, which is about the investigation of individual and collective proverb knowledge and the factors influencing this knowledge. Grzybek was among other things co-founder of the Westphalian working group "Phraseology / Parömiologie" (1991–2002), founding member and from 1999 to 2006 Scientific Advisory Board of the European Society for Phraseology , he is one of the editors of the book series Phraseology & Parömiologie (1998ff.) In continuation of studies in phraseology and paremiology (1994–98), member of the editorial board of Proverbium - An International Yearbook of International Proverb Scholarship (USA, 2004ff.) and Scientific Advisory Board of the International Association of Paremiology (2007ff.).
In the transition area between quantitative linguistics and quantitative literary studies , in addition to works on the history of quantitative linguistics and literary studies, he has also presented numerous studies on quantitative text analysis. Within the International Quantitative Linguistics Association he was initially Treasurer (2005–07) and Secretary General (2007–09), and finally also its Vice President (2009–12). He was a member of the international advisory board of the journals Glottometrics (2004ff.) (PDF full text ) and Glottotheory (2008ff.) As well as co-editor of the international book series Quantitative Linguistics and the dictionary Quantitative and Formal Linguistics . Grzybek has led a number of research projects in this area, for example on word length and grapheme and phoneme frequencies in Slavic languages, and recently also on quantitative film analysis.
