Peter Hilger

Peter Hilger (born December 23, 1953 in Münster-Sarmsheim ) is a German Roman Catholic priest . He is a member of the Mainz cathedral chapter and as the official head of the ecclesiastical jurisdiction in the diocese of Mainz .

Life

After graduating from high school in Bingen, Hilger did compulsory military service in the armed forces . From 1974 to 1980 he studied Catholic theology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and in Freiburg . After graduation Hilger received on 13 June in 1981 by Hermann Cardinal Volk in Mainz Cathedral , the ordination . His chaplain positions were in Lich and Worms as well as temporary help in Einhausen (Hesse) , Ober-Olm and Klein-Winternheim . He was then given leave to continue studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University . In Rome he studied canon law, obtained his licentiate and in 1990 was entitled The Right to Christian Education. An examination of the genesis of Gravissimum educationis with regard to can. 217 (CIC / 1983) as Dr. iur. can. PhD. Doctoral supervisor was the later Cardinal Velasio De Paolis .

Hilger worked from 1990 to 1993 as a diocesan judge and marriage bond defender of his diocese. From 1990 to 2016 he taught as a lecturer in canon law at various training centers in the Mainz diocese. In the Mainz old town of St. Ignaz he was pastor from 1991 to 1996 and then from 1997 to 2015 took over the role of Rector ecclesiae in the monastery chapel “St. Clare ”of the Capuchin Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration .

On July 1, 1993, Peter Hilger became official and thus head of the ecclesiastical jurisdiction in the diocese of Mainz. He is the longest serving official in the area of ​​the German Bishops' Conference . Bishop Karl Lehmann appointed Hilger in 1997 as honorary cathedral capitular and in early 2001 as resident cathedral capitular at Mainz Cathedral. He has held the post of penitentiary at the High Cathedral in Mainz according to Canon 508 of the CIC since March 1, 2004. Pope John Paul II awarded him the papal honorary title " Chaplain of His Holiness " ( Monsignor ) in 1994 and " Honorary Prelate of His Holiness " (Prelate).

From 2008 to 2019, Prelate Hilger was a member of the World Church Foundation Board of Trustees (Diocese of Mainz).

Bishop Peter Kohlgraf confirmed Prelate Hilger in the office of official on August 27, 2017. Since the beginning of 2018 he has been senior capituli of the Mainz cathedral chapter.
