Velasio Cardinal De Paolis CS (born September 19, 1935 in Sonnino , Province of Latina , Italy , † September 9, 2017 in Rome ) was a Roman Catholic canon lawyer and cardinal of the Curia .

Life

Velasio De Paolis entered the Congregation of Missionaries of Saint Charles Borromeo after his school days and studied at the seminary of the religious community. He made his perpetual profession on October 4, 1958 , and was ordained a priest on March 18, 1961 . De Paolis was then sent to Rome to continue his studies in canon law , where he in 1966 at the Pontifical Gregorian University with a dissertation on The Nature of Violence of the Vicar General. A historical-critical analysis of the Dr. iur. can. doctorate was and at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas , the licentiate in Catholic theology acquired.

From 1965 to 1970 Velasio De Paolis taught moral theology and canon law at the seminary of the Congregatio Scalabriniana. In 1971 he became professor of canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University. De Paolis was also Provincial of his order from 1970 to 1974 . In 1987 he became a professor at the Pontifical Urban University and in 1998 finally dean of the Faculty of Canon Law.

De Paolis was consultor of the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legal Texts , the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , the Congregation for the Clergy , the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life .

On 30 December 2003 it appointed Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Thélepte and secretary of the Apostolic Signatura . He was ordained bishop on February 21, 2004 by Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop Silvano Maria Tomasi CS and Bishop Francesco Saverio Salerno .

On April 12, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . President of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See and made him titular Archbishop pro hac vice . In addition, Benedict XVI called him. on July 9, 2010 to the Pontifical Delegate for the Legionaries of Christ , where he is to be responsible for the structural and spiritual changes of the religious community , which had requested a previous Apostolic Visit due to the abuse scandal surrounding the Order's founder Marcial Maciel Degollado .

In the consistory of November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Gesù Buon Pastore alla Montagnola in the college of cardinals . On September 21, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation of the President of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See, put forward by Cardinal Velasio De Paolis for reasons of age.
