Sergio Sebastiani
Sergio Cardinal Sebastiani (born April 11, 1931 in Montemonaco , Ascoli Piceno Province , Italy ) is a Cardinal Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Sergio Sebastiani was a seminarian at the Almo Collegio Capranica and studied philosophy and Catholic theology , he received the sacrament of ordination in 1956 . First he obtained a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University and later did his doctorate at the Pontifical Lateran University in the department of canon law and completed the preparatory service for the diplomatic career. After assignments abroad in Peru , Brazil and Chile , he worked in the Vatican State Secretariat as an employee of several cardinals.
Pope Paul VI appointed him September 27, 1976 titular Archbishop of Caesarea in Mauretania and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Madagascar and Mauritius with responsibilities for the islands of Réunion and for the Comoros . The episcopal ordination received his Jean-Maria Cardinal Villot of the same year on 30 October. Pope John Paul II appointed him apostolic nuncio in Turkey on January 8, 1985 .
In November 1994 he was appointed general secretary of the Central Committee for Preparing the Holy Year 2000. Since 1997 he has been President of the Prefecture for Economic Affairs of the Holy See .
John Paul II accepted Sergio Sebastiani on February 21, 2001 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Sant'Eustachio in the college of cardinals .
Sergio Sebastiani was a participant in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen.
On April 12, 2008, Benedict XVI. Sebastiani's resignation from the office of President of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See, submitted for reasons of age.
On 21 February 2011 he was maintaining its pro hac vice to the titular church declared Title Diakonie to Cardinal priests charged. Since he passed the age limit of 80 in the same year, Cardinal Sebastiani did not take part in the 2013 conclave .
