Important work

Peter Holman examined Michael Praetorius ' collection of French dances, “ Terpsichore ” (1612), which today is one of his most frequently performed works, but has hardly been researched. He first presented various performance traditions of this music in the 20th century in order to take a look at the conception of the collection itself and the performance practice of court dance music from France at the beginning of the 17th century. On the one hand, he made the systematic character of the collection clear and on the other hand, he demonstrated that the majority of these pieces were originally composed for a violin ensemble working at the French court, an aspect that should be taken into account in today's performances of this music. He also made a number of recordings with his various ensembles as a conductor and as an instrumentalist.
