Peter Huỳnh Văn Hai

Peter Huỳnh Văn Hai (born May 18, 1954 in Bến Tre , Bến Tre Province , Vietnam ) is a Vietnamese clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Vĩnh Long .

Life

Peter Huỳnh Văn Hai entered the boys' seminary in 1966 and later in the seminary of the diocese of Vĩnh Long. Because of the church persecution by the communist regime of Vietnam, he had to leave the seminary in 1978. It was not until 1991 that he was able to resume his priestly training and received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of V dasnh Long on August 31, 1994 .

In the following ten years he stayed for further studies at the Institut Catholique de Paris , where he received his doctorate in philosophy . From 2004 to 2008 he was responsible for vocational pastoral care in his home diocese. Since 2008 he has been a lecturer in philosophy at the seminaries of the Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City and the Diocese of Cần Thơ . In 2012 it also became sub-rain of the seminar of Cần Thơ.

On October 7, 2015, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Vĩnh Long. He was ordained episcopal on December 11th of the same year by the Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City, Paul Bùi Van Ðoc . Co- consecrators were the bishop of Thanh Hóa , Joseph Nguyễn Chí Linh , and the bishop of Cần Thơ, Stephanus Tri Buu Thien .

His name combines western naming tradition ( Peter as first name before the family name Huỳnh ) with Vietnamese ( Văn Hai as a personal name is behind the family name).
