Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal (born November 30, 1957 in Vienna ) is an Austrian diplomat . From 2017 to 2019 he was spokesman of the Austrian federal government short-I .

From 2015 to 2017 he was Head of Section VII (Development) in the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs . Previously, from 2012 to 2015, he was Under-Secretary General of the United Nations for Communications and Public Relations.

Life

Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal comes from the old Austrian family Ritter Launsky von Tieffenthal and grew up in Vienna. He studied law and initially worked in banking (including in London at the International Finance Corporation ). After joining the foreign service in 1985, he worked at the embassies in Washington , New Delhi and Riyadh . In Washington he got to know the then ambassador and later Federal President Thomas Klestil , when his personal secretary Launsky-Tieffenthal later worked in the presidential office. Between 2000 and 2004 he was the Austrian Consul General in Los Angeles . He then headed the Crisis Management and Citizens Service Department in the Foreign Ministry and was also the Ministry's press spokesman between 2007 and 2012. In these two functions, Launsky-Tieffenthal became known to a wider public as he acted, among other things, as a mediator in crisis situations (such as kidnapping of Austrians abroad) and represented the ministry's activities in this regard to the media.

In May 2012, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon announced that he would appoint Launsky-Tieffenthal as Head of the UN Press and Information Department with the rank of Under-Secretary General . In this position, which he took up in summer 2012, the diplomat was responsible for the activities of the main department at its headquarters in New York and 63 subsidiary locations worldwide with a total of over 700 employees. In addition to looking after the UN's media department, one of the main tasks was the ongoing communication with over 1600 NGOs with which the UN works. He also acts as the United Nations' Coordinator for Multilingualism .

In April 2015 it became known that Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz had appointed Launsky-Tieffenthal to head Section VII (Development) in the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs due to his many years of experience with communication and international relations. Since assuming this function, he has been primarily responsible for Austrian development cooperation and, in this context, also chairman of the supervisory board of the Austrian Development Agency .
