Peter Luther (born May 10, 1942 in Drohndorf ) is a German immunologist and politician ( CDU ). From 1991 to 2001 and from 2006 to 2011 he was a member of the House of Representatives and from 1991 to 1996 Senator for Health in Berlin .

Life

Luther attended the schools in Drohndorf, Aschersleben and Eisenach . After graduating from high school in 1962, he began studying physiology and agriculture at the Humboldt University in Berlin , which he completed in 1968 with an examination as a qualified farmer. From 1969 to 1974 he continued his medical studies as a research assistant at the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the Charité in Berlin. In 1974 he was at Otto Prokop with a theme for immunology Dr. rer. nat. PhD . From 1975 to 1979 he worked as a research assistant at the Research Institute for Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis in the Berlin-Buch Clinic . 1980 the habilitation to the Dr. sc. ( PhD B ).

Luther was senior assistant from 1979 to 1985, head of department from 1985 to 1990 and then director of the Research Institute for Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis in Berlin-Buch . By 1990 he published over 200 scientific papers and lectures, as well as two specialist books on the subjects of immunology, infection biology, oral immunization, lectinology and tumor biology. From 1996 to 1997 he worked for the Association of Research-Based Pharmaceutical Manufacturers .

Peter Luther is the 14th generation of the descendant of the brother of the reformer Martin Luther , Jakob Luther. He is married and has two grown sons.

politics

Luther has been a member of the CDU since 1963 . From 1992 to 2001 he was chairman of the CDU district association Berlin-Weißensee and the greater Pankow-Weißensee-Prenzlauer Berg district. In 1996 he was elected to the state executive committee of the CDU Berlin . He is honorary chairman of the CDU Pankow.

After the reunification of Germany , Luther was elected to the Berlin House of Representatives for the first time in December 1990 . Shortly after taking office, he became Senator for Health in Eberhard Diepgen's cabinet on January 24, 1991 . He held the office as a member of the Senate until January 1996. In the elections to the House of Representatives in 1995 and 1999 , he was able to defend his mandate. From 1999 to 2001 he was Vice President of the Berlin House of Representatives. In 2001 he resigned from parliament, to which he was again a member from 2006 to 2011. Most recently he was a member of the Committee on Home Affairs, Security and Order, the Committee on Health, Environment and Consumer Protection and the Subcommittee on Data Protection and Freedom of Information of the Committee on Home Affairs, Security and Order.

Honors

In 1982 he was awarded the Rudolf Virchow Prize .
