Peter Mathiesen Hentze (born October 22, 1753 in Horsens / Denmark ; † June 25, 1843 ) was a Danish pastor , later provost of the Faroe Islands .

Life

Peter was the son of the German master mason and plasterer Mathias Hentze, who emigrated to Denmark. He went to the Latin school in Horsens, which he graduated from at the age of 19. He did not become a pastor until he was 29 and in 1783 accepted a position on Sandoy . In the same year he married Maren Christine Eisenberg (1758–1840).

Between 1807 and 1817 he was parish priest for Südstreymoy , Vágur and Eysturoy . At the same time, this meant the rise to vice-provost in 1807, provost in 1814 and official provost 1816–1829. Hentze retired in 1837 and died in 1843.

His 57 years as a pastor in the Faroe Islands is considered to be exceptional. He is also said to have been a good doctor and, as a theologian, “understood more than his Lord's Prayer”, as his biographer Jørgen Bloch put it.

Most important for posterity is his collection of Faroese ballads . Together with his colleague Johan Henrik Schrøter, he was involved in the creation of the first printed book in Faroese , which was published in 1822 by Hans Christian Lyngbye : Færøske Kvæder om Sigurd Fofnersbane og hans Æt . Hentze collected 19 of the ballads printed there and sent them to Lyngbye in 1819.

Hentze's assistant Jóannes í Króki (1794–1869) was also given special significance in the written record of the previously only oral monuments .

Today Hentze is a widespread family name in the Faroe Islands.
