history

The company was founded by the winery owner and master winemaker Peter Mertes in 1924 in Minheim and dealt with the production and sale of Moselle wine . In the 1950s, his son-in-law Gustav Willkomm expanded the activities to include the wine-growing regions of Rheinhessen and Palatinate . In the 1960s, the range was expanded to include wines from the Rheingau and Nahe .

Today wine from all over Rhineland-Palatinate is marketed. The company's aim is to make wine super marketable . That means offering standardized, constantly available goods. Today, Peter Mertes wine can be found in all parts of Germany and in many foreign markets. The company owns Germany's largest barrique cellar, a 240 m long slate vaulted cellar from the 19th century with 1,500 barrique barrels of 225 l, in which Dornfelder is expanded .

Peter Mertes family wineries

The company's wineries are grouped under the Peter Mertes Familienweingüter KG. It encloses individual vineyards as well as traditional houses that operate independently.

The Peter Mertes family wineries acquires businesses without a successor, invests in modern equipment and repositions the wineries for the market. The aim is to preserve centuries-old vineyards in the local growing area. In total, the Peter Mertes family wineries cultivate around 120 hectares of vineyards on the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer. The location portfolio includes well-known vineyards such as Bernkasteler Doctor , Ockfener Bockstein or Wehlener Sundial . The Witwe Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Müller-Burggraef with the historic Doctor's cellar directly under the Berncasteler Doctor vineyard is one of the most important properties of the family wineries.

Peter Mertes grant

Since 1985, the Bonner Kunstverein has awarded the Peter Mertes scholarship, a proposal scholarship to which selected and annually changing experts invite. The prize consists of a monthly grant over a year, followed by a special exhibition with a catalog, and is specifically aimed at “young artists who have often just left their training”. The Peter Mertes Weinkellerei and the Bonner Kunstverein, on the other hand, want to help artists “to create more space for their work in a time of great uncertainty”.
