Peter Metag

Peter "Jimi" Metag (born November 30, 1950 in Peitz ; † May 12, 2013 in Cottbus ) was a German concert promoter . He was one of the main organizers of Jazz concerts in the German Democratic Republic .

Life

Peter Metag lived in Peitz and learned the trade of a locksmith. He never used his actual first name, Klaus-Peter. He became better known under his nickname "Jimi" because he had hair like Jimi Hendrix . As of beat and soul music enthusiast, he organized in 1969 together with Ulli Blobel music events in the movie theaters Peitz and in 1973 the series of events Jazzwerkstatt Peitz . Between 3,000 and 5,000 visitors from all over the GDR traveled to the Peitzer open-air concerts, which take place every year in June. Until it was banned by the GDR authorities in 1982, it was the most popular jazz festival in the GDR.

Jimi Metag gave up his job as a locksmith, continued to manage jazz musicians and, after the Peaceful Revolution, from 1990 also looked after reading trips with jazz and others. a. with Günter Grass and Peter Rühmkorf . In the last years of his life he was dependent on a wheelchair due to a cerebral hemorrhage. For health reasons, Metag was no longer able to participate in the revival of the jazz festival in Peitz from 2011. Metag left behind his partner Silvia Hagen, who had lived with him since 1986.
