Gerold Hildebrand
Gerold Hildebrand (born May 19, 1955 in Lauchhammer ) is a former GDR civil rights activist and author .
Life
Hildebrand grew up in Ruhland . Even as a schoolboy, he took part in protests against arbitrary government in the GDR. Since he refused to use firearms in the border service , his study permit was withdrawn. He became an auxiliary nurse in a facility of the Stephanus Foundation near Templin and from autumn 1976 in the Jena University Hospital . Here he was able to train as a nurse. At the same time he took part in actions of the Junge Gemeinde Stadtmitte. His apartment was an important meeting place for the city's alternative youth. The death of his friend Matthias Domaschk shortly after his imprisonment by the state security had a lasting impact on his life. From the beginning of 1982 he lived in Berlin and worked at the St. Joseph Hospital. After various political campaigns, he worked in the Berlin Environmental Library from 1986 . He accompanied conscientious objectors in various contexts and co-edited the underground magazine “BeKenntnis”. In autumn 1989 he was one of the organizers of the intercession services and the contact telephone at the Gethsemane Church in Berlin . He was press officer at the New Forum and employee of the Matthias Domaschk Archive . From 1997 to 2005 he studied social sciences at the Humboldt University in Berlin . He wrote a large number of articles on the history of the resistance in the GDR and is an employee of the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial .
