It quickly became an important meeting point for the opposition environmental , peace and third world movements in the GDR . Whitsun 1987 he was one of those who documented the attacks by the People's Police against young people in East Berlin at the Concert for Berlin .

After the peaceful revolution in the GDR , Halbrock was able to start studying modern history, medieval history and European ethnology at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a grant from the Hans Böckler Foundation . In 2003 he received his doctorate here with a dissertation on pastors of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg from 1945 to 1961. phil. PhD .

He has been a research assistant at the Stasi Records Authority since 2007. His main research interests are the GDR church history, the history of the independent peace and environmental groups and GDR espionage in Sweden . In 2008, a special issue of the magazine Horch und Guck published his study on the demolition of the Berlin Church of Reconciliation .
