Peter E. Pieler

Peter E. Pieler (born December 14, 1941 in Vienna ; † October 1, 2018 ibid) was an Austrian legal historian and professor of Roman law and Byzantine legal history at the University of Vienna .

Life

After studying law at the University of Vienna, Pieler became a research assistant at the Institute for Roman Law and Ancient Legal History of his alma mater in 1965 . In 1967 he received his doctorate in law, and in 1980 he completed his habilitation in Roman law and ancient legal history. His habilitation thesis dealt with the imperial court and the imperial court organs from Augustus to Justinian . From 1983 until his retirement in 2010, Pieler was full professor of Roman law. From 1993 to 2000 he was Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna .

Together with Walter Selb , he worked on researching Roman legal texts and researched with Selb for corresponding manuscripts of old legal texts in the monasteries of Tur Abdin .

Pieler was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History and its chairman from 1998 to 2007.

Pieler was married and the father of two children.

Research priorities

In Roman law, Pieler dealt intensively with the court organization of the Roman Empire . He was specifically interested in the relationship between Roman law and canon law .
