Peter Prügel (* 1958 in Säckingen ) is a German diplomat . He was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Afghanistan from 2018 to 2020 .

Life

After graduating from high school, Prügel began studying political science and Romance studies at the University of Konstanz , which he completed with a Magister (MA) after the state examination. He then studied at the École nationale d'administration (ENA) in Paris between 1987 and 1989 .

In 1989, Prügel began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and after its graduation was between 1991 and 1992 advisor for the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the former GDR in the Political Department of the Foreign Office in Bonn and then from 1992 to 1995 first secretary and economic advisor at the embassy in Italy . This was followed by a position as First Secretary and Political Advisor at the Embassy in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia between 1995 and 1997 , before he returned to Germany from 1997 to 2000 as an advisor in the parliamentary and cabinet department of the Federal Foreign Office's management team.

Following this, Prügel took part in an exchange program with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France between 2000 and 2002 , during which time he was the Chargé de Mission head of the department for continental Europe as an exchange officer . In 2002 he was then, for a short time, deputy head of the arms export control department in the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, and then between 2002 and 2005 initially personal advisor to Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and then from 2005 to 2006 personal advisor to Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier .

Afterwards, Prügel acted as envoy and head of the political department at the embassy in Turkey between 2006 and 2009 and as envoy and head of the political department at the embassy in Israel from 2009 to 2012 , before returning to Germany as regional representative between 2012 and 2015 for Asia and the Pacific was in the Foreign Office.

In August 2015, Prügel succeeded Rolf Peter Gottfried Schulze , who in turn became Ambassador to Chile , and Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Thailand . From 2018 to June 2020 he was ambassador to Afghanistan .
