Walter Hassmann

Walter Haßmann (* 1957 ) is a German diplomat .

Life

After graduating from high school, Haßmann completed his military service in the armed forces between 1976 and 1977 and then began studying forest science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Georg-August University in Göttingen in 1977 , which he graduated in 1982 with a degree in forestry. In 1977 he became a member of the Corps Arminia in Munich . After a two-year traineeship at the Bavarian State Forest Administration , he passed the Great State Forest Examination in Bavaria as a forest assessor in 1984.

In 1985 he joined the Foreign Service. After the career test for the higher service, he worked at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn and later in Berlin as well as assignments at the embassies in Oman , South Africa , Turkey and Hungary .

On April 9, 2014, he became the ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Yemen and thus successor to Carola Müller-Holtkemper , who in turn moved to the embassy in Mauritania as chargé d'affaires . After the accident of Germanwings flight 9525 on March 24, 2015, Haßmann was appointed head of the crisis team.

In August 2016 he became the German ambassador to Afghanistan , 2018 ambassador to Malta .
