Peter Quillin (born June 22, 1983 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American professional boxer and former world champion of the WBO middleweight division. He is the fifth world boxing champion from Grand Rapids , Michigan , after Stanley Ketchel , Tony Tucker , Roger Mayweather and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Quillin is under contract with Óscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions and is supervised by legendary coach Freddie Roach .

Career

Peter Quillin is the son of a Cuban and an African American . Although he was born in Chicago, he grew up in Grand Rapids. At the age of 15 he started boxing and only played 15 amateur fights before he switched to the professional camp under promoter Cedric Kushner in 2005 and was initially trained by Colin Morgan. His fighting name Kid Chocolate is based on the legendary Cuban boxer Eligio Montalvo. He lives and trains in New York City .

After winning 23 fights, including against Alexander Quiroz (13-4), Troy Lowry (27-7), Thomas Brown (11-3), Antwun Echols (31-7), Dionisio Miranda (18-2) and Fernando Zúñiga ( 28-9), he became American super middleweight champion on April 29, 2011 with a TKO victory in round 3 against Jesse Brinkley (35-6).

On July 23, 2011 he defeated Jason LeHoullier (21-5) in Las Vegas by TKO in round 5 and on November 5, Craig McEwan (19-1) in Mexico by TKO in round 6. On June 2, 2012 he met in California on the multiple world champion Ronald Wright (51-5) and defeated him unanimously on points, he also had Wright in the fifth round on the ground.

Due to his previous successes he got the chance for the world championship belt of the WBO middleweight against the undefeated reigning champion Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam (27-0) from France on October 20, 2012 in Brooklyn . He had it on the ground six times and won clearly on points. He played his first title defense on April 27, 2013 in Brooklyn against Fernando Guerrero (25-1) and won by unanimous decision. In addition, he had his opponent on the ground four times.

On October 26, 2013 he won against Gabriel Rosado (21-6) prematurely . On April 19, 2014, he also managed a unanimous victory over Lukáš Konečný (50-4).

In September 2014, he voluntarily resigned his WBO title.

In April 2015 he boxed a draw against Andy Lee (34-2). Five months later he defeated Michael Zerafa (17-1) by knockout in the fifth round. In the fight for the WBA Middleweight Championship on December 5, 2015, he was defeated by TKO in the first round against Daniel Jacobs (30-1).

In August 2018 he defeated J'Leon Love (24-1) unanimously.
