Peter Reuss (diplomat)

Peter Matthias Reuss (* 1964 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German diplomat . He has been an ambassador to UNESCO since September 2019 .

Life

After finishing high school and doing military service, Peter Reuss studied history , politics and economics in Freiburg, Basel and Paris . After graduating with a Magister Artium , a postgraduate course in interdisciplinary French studies followed at the University of Freiburg . Reuss received his doctorate there in 1994 with a thesis on the work of Wilhelm Hausenstein .

career

In 1994 Reuss joined the foreign service and completed the preparatory service for the higher foreign service by 1996. He then worked in the European Department of the Foreign Office , then worked at the German Embassy in Ankara from 1998 to 2001 and then became the personal advisor to the Federal Government's Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Foreign Office.

The following stations were the General Secretariat of the European Commission in Brussels (National Expert, 2004–2006), the German Bundestag (Foreign Policy Officer, 2006–2010) and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development , where he worked as Head of Unit from 2010 to 2013 was.

In 2010 Reuss was transferred to the German Embassy in Paris as envoy and head of the department for economics and finance, came back to the Foreign Office in 2017 as head of the China department and has been ambassador to the permanent representation at UNESCO in Paris since September 2019 .
