The Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to UNESCO in Paris represents the Federal Republic of Germany to UNESCO .

The head of the permanent mission is accredited with the rank of ambassador to UNESCO. Germany's permanent representative at UNESCO has been Ambassador Peter Reuss since September 2019 .

Permanent Representation and Foreign Office

The permanent representation works closely with the headquarters of the Federal Foreign Office . There the “Culture and Communication” department and the “United Nations and Global Issues” department deal with UNESCO. By issuing instructions to the Permanent Mission, they ensure that the Federal Republic of Germany is adequately represented at UNESCO and that its interests are protected.

The Permanent Mission takes an active part in UNESCO conferences, in particular in the meetings of the governing bodies (General Conference, Executive Board and Secretariat). In the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany, it participates in the organization and programs of UNESCO.

She is supported by representatives from the ministries, the German National Commission and external experts. You travel to selected conferences and are then a member of the delegation. The majority of the conferences take place at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The work here is carried out in the six official languages ​​of the United Nations (English, French, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic), mostly in English or French.

In addition, the permanent representation is committed to the network of German employees at UNESCO. She advises and supports applications, participates in the program for assistant experts, and seeks a close exchange with the German staff of UNESCO.
