Peter Savvas Vanezis

Peter Savvas Vanezis (born December 11, 1947 in Nicosia , Cyprus ) is a Cypriot-British pathologist and forensic doctor .

Life

Peter Savvas Vanezis was born on December 11, 1947 in Nicosia, Cyprus to Savvas Petrou and Efrosini Vanezis. In 1951 his parents immigrated to Great Britain with him . There Vanezis attended Wanstead County High School in London .

Vanezis graduated from the University of Bristol in Medicine and Surgery in 1972 , MB and ChB. From 1974 Vanezis practically worked in forensic pathology. 1976 followed the diploma in Medical Jurisprudence Pathology (DMJ (Path)) . In 1977 he became assistant surgeon for the Metropolitan Police Service . In 1978 he was accepted into the professional body of pathologists, the Royal College of Pathologists . In 1990 he was appointed a fellow of the corporation. In 1979 he gave up his duties at the "Met" and took over lectures at the London Hospital Medical College . In 1990 he moved to Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School as a reader . During his time at Charing Cross, he took over the management of the Center for International Forensic Assistance (CIFA). In 1993 he gave up all positions as he was appointed Regius Professor of Forensic Medicine at the University of Glasgow . In 2003, in addition to the professorship, he took over the management of the London laboratory of the Forensic Science Service .

In 2006 Vanezis gave up the Regius Professorship. Vanezis has been teaching forensic medicine at the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London since 2006 , where he also heads the Cameron Center for Forensic Medical Sciences .

In the course of his activities, Vanezis temporarily headed the British Academy of Forensic Sciences and the British Association for Human Identification .

In his career as a forensic pathologist, Vanezis investigated approximately 2,000 suspicious deaths, of which approximately 1,500 were found homicides . Vanezis carried out a further 800 autopsies on behalf of the British Ministry of Defense . As civil advisor to the Ministry of Defense, Vanezis also carried out autopsies abroad, also for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda . He helped identify victims in mass graves in Sri Lanka and Chile .

Because of his exposed position, Vanezis appeared in various television programs, including 2002 Death of the Iceman in the Horizon series . Crime Scene Creatures followed in 2006 and American Ripper in 2017 .

Honors

In 1985 he was awarded a Medicinae Doctor (MD) by the University of Bristol . In 1990 he received a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from London University . In 1996 he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow . In 2006 he was appointed Fellow of the Forensic Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians .

Vanezis was appointed Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in 2001 for his services as a forensic scientist in Kosovo .
