Peter Schleiff

Peter Schleiff (born November 19, 1910 in Halle (Saale) ; † June 1, 2011 in Quedlinburg ) was a German dermatologist and venereologist.

Life

As the son of a dermatologist and a teacher, Schleiff studied medicine from 1930 at the University of Zurich , the Friedrich University of Halle , the Hessian Ludwig University of Gießen ( Physikum ) and the Friedrich Schiller University . In 1932 he joined the Corps Thuringia Jena with his brother Arnold Schleiff , which later awarded him honorary membership. In the same year he also became a member of Thuringia's cartel corps Hassia Gießen . After he had passed the state examination in Halle in 1935 and was awarded a Dr. med. After receiving his doctorate , he began his dermatological training on January 1, 1937 with Walther Schönfeld in the Heidelberg University Hospital . As a newly qualified specialist , he took care of the branch office with 80 beds in Neuwied , then a hospital with 240 beds in Bitche , Lorraine . He came to the Western Front in 1944/1945 . During Operation Overlord , he became a British prisoner of war. As a camp doctor, he mainly cared for venerological patients. As a lecturer at the Medical Academy for German prisoners of war , he gave lectures to medical students on dermatology and venereology.

When he got home in July 1948, both Halle and Halberstadt (his grandparents' town) had been destroyed. In the 60-year-old Quedlinburg Hospital , a ward for venereal disease was housed in a former barn. On August 1, 1948, Schleiff was commissioned to turn it into a clinic. As chief physician with a monthly salary of 250 German marks , he managed to set up a dermatology clinic with 70 beds, X-rays , laboratories , bathing and cosmetics departments in the villa of a former seed breeding company. He was a district venerologist and district lupus doctor for the Halle district and was appointed senior medical officer. Retired in 1977, he ran a small private practice in his house until he was 98. He was involved in the Evangelical Church and the Quedlinburg Rotary Club .
