In 1920 he moved back to Würzburg and taught at the New Gymnasium (today's Riemenschneider Gymnasium). In the same year Schneider co-founded the Frankenbund . After a brief teaching position in Aschaffenburg, he returned to Würzburg in 1934. In the devastating attack on Würzburg on March 16, 1945 he lost his belongings; its extensive library as well as its records and manuscripts burned. He spent the following three years with his family in Gerolzhofen, moved to his hometown Bamberg in 1948 and took over the management of the old grammar school there . In 1950 he left the school service. He died on January 19, 1958 in Bamberg and was buried there two days later with great public sympathy.

Peter Schneider became the first Philistine senior of the young union and is considered the “ godfather ” of the Franco councils due to his commitment .

His second "life project" was the Frankenbund . At a young age, Schneider came to the public with (art) historical and folklore topics. The preoccupation with Franconia , its history and culture, its landscape, its language and its inhabitants became his life's work. Together with like-minded people, he founded the Frankenbund eV on October 11, 1920, which saw itself as a "Federation for the knowledge and care of the Franconian land and people". Schneider was a well-respected writer and researcher whose fields of work included Franconian history, folklore , heraldry and linguistic research, as well as a gifted speaker who knew how to inspire and carry his audience away.
