The state-run Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium Bamberg (FLG), formerly the Neues Gymnasium Bamberg (NG), is a linguistic and humanistic high school in Bamberg , Upper Franconia . It is named after Prince-Bishop Franz Ludwig von Erthal , who distinguished himself as an educational and social reformer in the 18th century .
history
On October 1, 1890, the school was opened as the second Bamberg high school under the name Neues Gymnasium. While the old grammar school remained accessible only to Catholic boys, the new grammar school was also opened to girls as well as Protestant and Jewish students by order of the Ministry of Culture .
In 1938, when the National Socialists converted the grammar schools into "German high schools", the school was the only grammar school in Upper Franconia to continue the tradition of the humanistic grammar school with the subjects Greek and Latin, so that after 1945 no fundamental change was necessary.
After the completion of the new building between the main building and the rear building in 1963, the school introduced a new language branch in addition to the humanistic branch with Latin, English and French.
In 1965 the school was named Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium after the penultimate Prince-Bishop of Bamberg, Franz Ludwig von Erthal (1730–1795), who made special contributions as a social reformer and promoter of school and science.
At the beginning of the 1974 school year, the college level model was introduced in the 11th grade.
In February 1979 a pedagogical seminar for the subjects German, history and social studies was set up at the school. Later, the subjects of Catholic religious studies, English, mathematics, physics and finally geography were added. Teacher training in Catholic religious education has now been discontinued at the Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium.
In 1998 the school set up a new branch with English as the first foreign language. The other two branches remained. The number of students increased in the following years.
In 2005 the new building on Luisenstrasse was inaugurated.
After the demolition of the old intermediate building, the new construction of a double gym began in 2007 and was completed in October 2008.
In addition to language courses in Latin, English, French, Ancient Greek and Spanish, there have also been elective courses in Russian, Italian and Chinese.
location
The Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium is located in the center of Bamberg between the central bus station and the court, directly on the Main-Danube Canal (Heinrichsdamm).
Trivia
Until the archbishop 's college for boys was closed in 1999, the Franz-Ludwig-Gymnasium was the school of the “ Ottonians ”.
Also until 1999, since the grammar school was founded, all headmasters were classical philologists (most recently Alfons Neudecker).
