Peter Schumm (born October 28, 1942 in Hildesheim ) is a German athlete and multiple world, European and German champion in different age groups in sports walking .

Live and act

Schumm began his sporting career in the late 1950s as a long-distance runner at DLC Aachen . His best times at the time were under 17:00 minutes for the 5000 meter run . After being late for the start of a planned running event in 1975, he spontaneously registered for a later walking competition. Since he nevertheless achieved third place completely unprepared, he saw his future in sports while walking and began to specialize in this discipline in terms of training methods. Since he could hardly find suitable training partners especially for this discipline in the DLC as a pure running club at the time, he switched to the athletics department of the Alemannia Aachen in 1986 . Here he celebrated numerous regional and national successes together with the other walkers and won numerous German championships , as well as European and world championship titles in the various age groups , both in the individual and in the team classification. In addition, he always took top places in many other competitions, including West German, North Rhine and District Championships, and set many new course records for his respective age group.

Over the years, Peter Schumm has received various awards for his outstanding sporting achievements by his club and the North Rhine Athletics Association and has received, among other things, the gold pin from the German Athletics Association (DLV) and from the city of Aachen, in addition to several prizes in both 2007 and 2018 the Aachener Karlssiegel.

Schumm was already successful in the younger senior age group and qualified as a walker several times in the 1970s and 1980s for the German Athletics Championships over 20 kilometers, which at that time were still subject to a qualification standard within the main championships. However, he achieved his greatest successes especially in the older age groups from the age group 60 to the current age group 75. In his special disciplines, three and five kilometer walking on the track and in the hall as well as the three, five, ten and twenty kilometer street competitions He kept getting new personal bests.
