Peter Tanz (born August 27, 1938 in Weimar ; † December 25, 2012 in Dreitzsch ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran pastor . He was awarded honorary citizenship for his contribution to the democratic revolution in Neustadt an der Orla .

Life

Peter Tanz attended school in Weimar and then completed an apprenticeship as a milling cutter and hobler at the combine harvester in Weimar . From 1954 to 1957 he attended the elementary school for music Weimar-Belvedere, majoring in bassoon . However, he could not finish his music studies due to a passport violation. From 1965 he studied Protestant theology at the Theological Seminary in Leipzig and was elected pastor in Weltwitz in November 1975 . He held this position until he retired in 2000.

In the 1980s he was also active as a youth pastor in the Neustadt an der Orla parish . There it is also inextricably linked with the democratic revolution of 1989/1990. He had a lasting impact on the development and orientation of the local protest movement. On October 12, 1989, the first political prayer for peace took place under his leadership in the town church of Neustadt . In the first free local elections in May 1990, he was elected to the district council of the Pößneck district, to which he belonged until 1994. On the eve of his 70th birthday, August 26, 2008, he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Neustadt an der Orla.
