Peter Thienhaus (born March 15, 1911 in Berlin , † October 10, 1984 in Lübeck ) was a German painter, graphic artist and object artist.

Live and act

Peter Thienhaus was the son of the painter Rudolf Thienhaus (1873–1962). Since his mother, a concert pianist, died at birth and his father lived in Holland, Peter grew up in Lübeck with the family of his uncle, the high school professor at the Oberschule zum Dom Paul Thienhaus, together with his children, including Erich Thienhaus and Waltraut Thienhaus, from 1933 wife of Hugo Distler . He created the illustrations for Distler's autograph of his Little Advent Music (op. 4), which he gave to his future wife for Christmas 1931. He attended the Oberschule zum Dom and was influenced by Hans Peters and Asmus Jessen in their art classes. After graduating from high school in 1929, he studied at the United State Schools for Free and Applied Arts in Berlin and was a student of Emil Orlik and Walter Habdank until his death in 1932 . After the National Socialists came to power, he left the university and initially worked as a graphic designer and book illustrator from 1933 to 1940. In 1939, through the mediation of Asmus Jessen, he received the order to paint the eagle hall in the Lübeck chancellery building . In 1940 he married and became a soldier. His Berlin studio with all the works and designs in it was the victim of an air raid in 1943. Thienhaus was taken prisoner by the Soviets in 1944 and was in the Morschansk camp until 1948 .

From 1950 to 1959 Thienhaus was employed by the city administration of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and worked here for the city planning office, tourism advertising and the building construction department, among other things.

From 1959 Thienhaus worked as a freelancer. In Lübeck there are numerous examples of his work as art in architecture , including glass windows in the Museum for Nature and the Environment Lübeck or the draft of the two panels on the Heinrich the Lion monument erected in 1975 in the cathedral cemetery .

An important part of his work are watercolors that were created while traveling to Morocco and Greece, as well as his Lübeck watercolors. For a decade he was responsible for the design of the covers of the yearbook Der Wagen .

In 1987 the Lübeck Overbeck Society honored him with a comprehensive commemorative exhibition.
