Peter Webhofer

Peter Webhofer (born March 26, 1932 in Tristach , East Tyrol, † September 14, 2016 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian clergyman , church musician and musicologist .

Life

Webhofer attended grammar school in Lienz and Schwaz , after which he studied theology at the University of Innsbruck . In 1957 he was ordained a priest by Paulus Rusch in the deanery parish church Sillian , after which he worked for three years as a cooperator in Steinach am Brenner . He then studied organ, composition, conducting and musicology at the Innsbruck Conservatory with Karl Koch and at the Pontificio Istituto di Musica Sacra in Rome. After receiving his doctorate in 1964, he returned to Tyrol and became the first cathedral music director of the newly created diocese of Innsbruck . He led the rejuvenated and enlarged cathedral choir and implemented the church music innovations of the Second Vatican Council on the diocesan level. He also taught at the Innsbruck Conservatory and religion at a grammar school.

After he had to give up the office of cathedral music director in 1972 for health reasons, he pursued musicological studies, mainly with Giovanni Felice Sances , and after training at the Sacra Rota Romana, from 1983 worked for 30 years as a judge at the marriage court of the episcopal ordinariate. In 1979 he founded the Cappella Oenipontana , an early music ensemble that he supervised scientifically. After his death in 2016 he was buried in the crypt of Innsbruck Cathedral .
