Peter Wesley-Smith (born June 10, 1945 in Adelaide , Australia ) is an Australian law professor and author.

Career

Wesley-Smith escaped military service in the Vietnam War through his studies. He eventually became a professor at the Law Faculty of Hong Kong University . Wesley-Smith became a member of the Hong Kong Law Reform Commission and editor-in-chief of the Hong Kong Law Journal. He has authored several books and articles on the Hong Kong constitution and legal system. Wesley-Smith is a member of the International Platform for Jurists for East Timor , which campaigned for East Timor , which was occupied by Indonesia from 1975 to 1999 . He has presented work at international conferences on East Timor and international law.

In 1994 Peter traveled to the Philippines with his two brothers Martin and Robert to take part in the Asia-Pacific Conference on East Timor APCET as a representative of East Timor . East Timorese themselves were prevented from attending the conference itself. The three brothers came to the Philippines on a list of foreigners to be arrested and deported.

After his retirement, Peter Wesley-Smith returned to Australia, where he lives in the country.

Artistic activities

Wesley-Smith's brother Martin was a composer and Peter contributed the lyrics to many of his songs and choral works. In the "documentary music drama" Quito , the two brothers summarized the topics of schizophrenia and East Timor. The Song Company performed the piece in Amsterdam , 's-Hertogenbosch , Copenhagen , Gent , Groningen , Hong Kong , Kuala Lumpur , Cascais , Sydney and Kangaroo Valley . Other well-known pieces of music by the two brothers are Boojum! and the children's song story Pip! .

Peter Wesley-Smith has also published books with verse such as The Ombley-Gombley , an English adaptation of Hocus Pocus , a collection of nonsense rhymes by the Danish poet Halfdan Rasmussen . There are also other song lyrics, such as The Day We Found O'Reilly's Chook in Mrs Boon's Backyard and the unfinished I Don't Think I'm Indecisive, Am I? .

family

With Martin († 2019) Peter had a twin brother who, like his older brother Robert, also campaigned for East Timor. Jeremy was the fourth brother. The father Harry was an academic archivist at the University of Adelaide and the mother Sheila presented the ABC radio program "Kindergarten of the Air".

Awards

In 2014 Wesley-Smith received the Insígnia des Ordem de Timor-Leste from East Timor’s President Taur Matan Ruak . His brothers Robert and Peter were also honored.
