Peter William Hochachka

Peter William Hochachka (born March 1, 1937 in Bordenave , Alberta , † September 16, 2002 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) was a Canadian zoologist .

Life

Peter Hochachka began his scientific career at the University of Alberta , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1959 . Further stations were Dalhousie University in Halifax , where he received his Master of Science degree, and Duke University , where he received his Ph.D. in 1964. completed. From 1966 until his death in 2002, Hochachka worked at the University of British Columbia in the department of zoology .

Hochachka made significant contributions to comparative physiology. His focus was on the adaptation of the metabolism to environmental influences in various species such as fish, reptiles, birds and humans. In this field he was an internationally recognized expert until his death. It is precisely this diversity of examined organisms and methods that characterizes the work of the physiologist Peter Hochachka. In doing so, however, he always followed the principle of “unity in diversity”, which underlies the organisms.

In addition to numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship (1977), the Killam Research Prize (1987, 1988), Science Council Gold Medal (1987), Canada Council / Killam Memorial Prize (1993) and the NSERC Gold Medal for Science and Engineering (1995 ) Hochachka was the author of 7 books and almost 400 articles.
