Peter Wise († April 29, 1338 ) was a Lübeck merchant and patron of the Doberan Monastery .

Life

Little is known about the life of the Lübeck citizen Peter Wise. He had two brothers in Doberan Monastery and a sister. In the dispute between the Wendish and Saxon monks in Doberan, the lay brother of the Cistercians Johann Kruse , who probably came from Wismar, was believed to be the leader of the Wendish party, consisting of members of the order from the Hanseatic cities on the southern Baltic coast in the monastery in the first half of the 14th century , which turned against the preference of the Saxon party of the Doberan monastery by the mother monastery Amelungsborn in Lower Saxony and sought to expand the influence of the urban patriciate from Lübeck to Rostock with the help of the Mecklenburg ducal house. Thanks to the financial resources from the estate of Peter Wise, who despite his geographical affiliation to the Wendish party was probably closer to the Saxon party and whose two brothers were monks of the monastery, the economic consequences of this dispute could be averted by the Doberan monastery. The Admannshagen estate pledged by the monastery was redeemed again in 1341 using funds from his estate . He was buried in the Doberan Minster ; the figure grave slab of Wises, which temporarily served as an altar slab, has been preserved.

epitaph

Much later, an epitaph was set for him in the Doberan Minster . The epitaph is a work from the 15th century and shows Peter Wise dressed in the fashion of around 1400 with his family crest. According to its inscription, the epitaph was renewed under Duke Christian Ludwig II of Mecklenburg in 1750.
