Peter Zec (born October 8, 1956 in Osnabrück ) is a German entrepreneur, communications and design consultant, author and publisher. He is the managing director of the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen and managing partner of Red Dot GmbH & Co. KG.

Life

Peter Zec is the son of Ljubomir Zec from the former Yugoslavia and the German Irma Zec. After graduating from high school in 1977, Zec volunteered for two years in the armed forces . From 1979 to 1987, Zec studied media studies, psychology and art studies at the University of Osnabrück . In 1984 he obtained the academic degree Magister Artium with the grade “with distinction”. He then obtained his doctorate in 1987 with a dissertation on "Holography - History, Technology, Art". phil. with the grade "with distinction". The dissertation was published in the same year with the same title in popular scientific form by DuMont Verlag Cologne.

From 1993 to 2002 Peter Zec was Professor of Business Communication at the University of Applied Sciences for Technology and Economics in Berlin. As the first appointed professor of the subject, he developed the curriculum for the diploma course in business communication, which accepted the first students in the 1994 summer semester. In addition, as part of a student project, Zec launched the “ German Prize for Business Communication ”, which is still held annually today.

In 1991, Zec began working as managing director of the Design Center North Rhine Westphalia in Essen. In 1992, Peter Zec introduced the idea of ​​label marketing in order to increase the income of the Design Center and thereby ensure economic success. This is how the “Red Dot” was created as an award for the elegant products selected by the jury, which was first introduced to the market in 1992 with the publication of the “Design Innovations” yearbook. In 2001 the new name “ Red Dot Design Award ” was used and the red dot was replaced by the red dot. Its design comes initially from Otl Aicher , who first designed a black and then an orange point. Zec then established the red logo.

In 2005, Peter Zec developed the Red Dot Award: Design Concept together with Ken Koo in Singapore. In 2009 he founded the Red Dot Institute for Advanced Design Studies together with Burkhard Jacob. In addition, with the Red Dot Design Museums in Essen, Singapore and Xiamen and the “Red Dot Edition” publishing house, further business areas were created under the “Red Dot” brand.

Special activities, exhibitions and publications

Together with Achim Lipp, Peter Zec curated the exhibition “More Light - Artist Holograms and Light Objects” in 1985, which was shown from July 26th to September 15th of the same year in the Hamburger Kunsthalle .

From 1985 to 1986 Peter Zec took over the management of the Museum for Holography & New Visual Media in Pulheim near Cologne. Subsequently, from 1986 to 1988, as head of the image department (including the medium of holography ), he was significantly involved in the planning of the Center for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe . With his participation, the concept `88 was created, which provided the basis for the establishment of the ZKM.

From 1989 to 1993 Peter Zec was the first chairman of the German Society for Holografie e. V., in whose founding he was involved as a founding member.

In 1988 Peter Zec published the book "Information Design - The Organized Communication". Information is understood as a new immaterial raw material of the digital age, which is brought into an application-specific form with the help of design.

In 1989, Peter Zec took over the management of the national designer associations, Bund Deutscher Grafik-Designer (BDG; today Professional Association of German Communication Designers) and the Association of German Industrial Designers (VDID), which were then based in Düsseldorf .

Together with Burkhard Jacob, Peter Zec published the book “Der Designwert. A new corporate management strategy ”. It introduces the method they have developed to calculate the design value of companies. In addition, the design value is used as an indicator for evaluating the innovation potential and growth opportunities of a company.

voluntary work

In 1999 and 2001 Peter Zec was elected to the Advisory Board of Directors of the world organization ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design), which was then based in Helsinki. In 2003, he became the organization's president-elect. In this function he developed the idea of ​​the World Design Capital project together with Dilki de Silva and Luigi Ferrara. From 2005 to 2007 Zec took over the office of ICSID President. In 2009, Zec resigned from his role as Founding Chair of the World Design Capital Project.

In 2003, in his role as ICSID President-elect, Zec was involved in founding the international umbrella organization IDA (International Design Alliance) based in Montreal, Canada. According to the statutes he was chairman and spokesman of the organization from October 2006 to October 2007.

Peter Zec has been a member of SIBAC (Seoul Business Advisory Council) since 2005. The task and goal of the council is to develop the city of Seoul into an economically and culturally leading location in North-East Asia. Zec has been Vice Chairman of SIBAC since 2018.

Awards

  • In October 2006 WirtschaftsWoche chose Peter Zec as one of the 20 creative lateral thinkers who changed the face of their companies or created completely new markets .
  • In May 2016, Zec received the special "Head of the Year" award from the Ruhr Marketing Club for its commitment to the Ruhr area.
  • In 2016 he was made an honorary citizen of Seoul for his commitment to the South Korean capital .
  • In 2017 Peter Zec received the BrandLaureate Legendary Award.
  • For his commitment to German design, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon, on August 8, 2019 by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
