Peter von Koblenz, also known as Peter Steinmetz von Koblenz (* around 1440 probably in Koblenz , † 1501 in Urach ), was a late medieval builder and stonemason who belonged to the Uracher Bauhütte and worked on numerous sacred buildings in Württemberg .

Works

Mostly on behalf of Count Eberhard im Bart , Peter von Koblenz built many churches in Württemberg: for example the collegiate church of St. Amandus in Urach, from 1470 to 1483 together with Hans Augsteindreyer the collegiate church in Tübingen or the village church in Heutingsheim, which he renewed until 1487 . After the reunification of Württemberg, he followed Count Eberhard to Stuttgart in 1482 and worked here together with Aberlin Jörg , the leading master builder in the former Stuttgart area, until 1490 . In 1491 he built the northern wing of the cloister for the Hirsau Monastery and also other, no longer preserved components. In Schwieberdingen from 1495 to 1498 he completed the choir of the Georgskirche , which Aberlin Jörg had started .

In the neighboring city of Grüningen, he tapped the source of the Upper Leudelsbach in order to supply the market well, which he built in 1499, with running water via a four-kilometer-long Teuch line . Because of the slight gradient, the line, which was used until the 20th century, is considered an engineering masterpiece. Before that, he had worked on the market fountain donated by Duke Eberhard in 1495 in Urach.

In the tower hall of the St. Amandus collegiate church in Urach there is an epitaph of the builder who died on November 16, 1501. The blank space at the date of death (MCCCCC_) suggests that he designed the epitaph himself and that the addition of the missing 1 was forgotten after his death. The partly damaged inscription reads "an [n] o domini m ccccc ... the heir master peter stainme [cz] [v] on koblencz dem got gnedig sy" died. The central field of the upside down epitaph shows only the recessed contours of its coat of arms.
