The Protestant Peterskirche in Heilbronn 's Neckargartach district is a choir tower church from the time of the medieval fortified churches, whose Gothic tower choir was incorporated into a baroque church building from 1766/67.

history

The sacristan's house goes back to the gate tower of the fortified church
These bells from 1920 replaced the bells that were melted down during World War I, but were in turn replaced with new bells in 1988

A church that was consecrated to the Apostle Prince Petrus has been mentioned for Neckargartach since 1295. As the mother church, the Peterskirche in Neckargartacher had various branches, including the Albanskirche there in Böllingen and Frankenbach . The Peterskirche at that time was still a fortified church . The church, together with sacristan's house and rectory with garden, stands on an elevation in the area and was once heavily walled and fortified.

The Peterskirche in Neckargartach was rebuilt and rebuilt again and again, for example in 1439 and 1551. The tower, which still has the character of the medieval defensive towers with loopholes, dates from this time. Neckargartach was reformed together with the Peterskirche in the middle of the 16th century . A side portal of the church dates back to 1605. The last church building was in 1766/67, from which the nave of the choir tower church originates, the main portal of which is dated 1767.

Remains of the gate tower, which was first converted into a school and then in the 18th century into the sacristan's house still preserved today, tell of the former fortified church.

During the First World War, the bells in St. Peter's Church were melted down to be used as cannon balls. In 1920 new bells were donated for the church, which have been on the church premises as monuments since the church was refurbished with bells in 1988.

In 1999, a show tower clock was installed in the tower clock room, which is occasionally open for inspection during events.

Church building

The sacred building was built as an east choir tower church, i. H. the choir with the carved altar from the early 16th century is in the basement of the east-facing church tower. The lower part of the tower dates back to the Gothic period and is made of sandstone . The tower has a square floor plan and was raised in Franconian half-timbered houses during the Baroque period (18th century) and provided with a bell chamber. The tower ends with a pyramidal spire. There is a door in the tower below; above her is:

I am the one who speaks to you and the life of Christ
through me comes the land of salvation 1605

The church building was renewed in 1767. The Peterskirche was conceived as a hall church and received a vault with stitch caps . A plaque with the following inscription is attached above the main portal on the western gable side:

My house is a house of prayer.
This church was built in 1767

Inside the church there is a gallery running around on three sides, which shows depictions of Jesus along with apostles and evangelists on 16 fields. In the southeast corner there is a wooden pulpit that dates from the late Renaissance . There are two coats of arms on the pulpit. One shows a female figure with an urn and stick and the date 1661, the other shows a wheel with the initials JCW The pulpit was also renovated when the church was renovated in 1767 and bears the inscription:

In 1767 the pulpit was renovated
Conrad Freudenthaler

A painting depicting Martin Luther with a swan is said to be in the church.

altar

In St. Peter's Church there is a Gothic winged altar from 1516. In the shrine of the altar there are carved full figures, the wings are painted. In addition to the altar wings that were once closed on working days, the altar also has a fixed pair of side wings.

The shrine of the altar shows three figures: in the middle Peter with the patriarchal cross, key and book, to the left of him Paul with a sword and to the right of him Jonannes the Baptist with a lamb. The left wing of the altar shows scenes from the life of Peter: on the inside the wondrous fish haul and the awakening of the tabea , on the outside the encounter between Christ and Peter and the martyrdom of Peter . In the right wing the life of Paul is depicted: on the inside the conversion of Paul and the flight from Damascus , on the outside the baptism of Paul by Ananias and the beheading of Paul . The fixed side wings show on the left an unidentifiable knight or saint in a red doublet with a dagger and a fluttering flag, at whose feet a maiden crouches. On the right, fixed wing, the pilgrim Wendelin can be seen with a staff and rosary.

In the predella , the four church fathers (Pope Gregory, Cardinal Hieronymus, Bishop Ambrose and Bishop Augustine) are depicted as half-busts.
