Petra Maisak (* 1950 in Heilbronn ) is a German art historian and Germanist. She was the museum director at the Goethe House / Free German Hochstift in Frankfurt am Main .

Career

Petra Maisak studied art history, German literature and history at the Universities of Heidelberg and Cologne . The doctorate took place in 1978 in Cologne with the work Arcadia . Genesis and typology of an idyllic dream world . From 1979 to 1981 she worked at the Rhineland State Monument Preservation Office in Bonn.

Act

From 1981 to 2015, Petra Maisak was museum director at the Free German Hochstift - Frankfurt Goethe Museum with responsibility for the historic Goethe House , the picture gallery of the Goethe era (refurbished in 1997) and the art collections. Between 1988 and 1998 she held teaching positions at the universities of Marburg and Gießen on the history of art in Goethe's time.

Petra Maisak's work and research focus is on the art and literature of the German Classical and Romantic periods under the aspect of intermediality. She has presented numerous works on Goethe and the visual arts, especially on Goethe's drawings and illustrations of his works (namely on “ Faust ” and “ The Sorrows of Young Werther ”). Her research area includes artists from the Goethe era such as Johann Heinrich Füssli , Caspar David Friedrich , Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein and Angelika Kauffmann, as well as works by Bettine von Arnim and Clemens Brentano.

Petra Maisak has curated numerous exhibitions, including "Goethe in 20th Century Art. World Literature and Imagery" (1982 Bonn Science Center and Frankfurt Goethe Museum; 1983 Palazzo Braschi Rome); "Christian Georg Schütz the Elder. A Frankfurt landscape painter of the Goethe era" (1991 Frankfurt Goethe Museum); “Goethe's Faust. Metamorphoses of a sorcerer ”(2005 in Kyoto and Tokyo, 2008 in Frankfurt a. M.); "Goethe on the Ball. Traxler's Classics" (2006 Frankfurt Goethe Museum); " Max Beckmann . Drawings for Goethe's Faust ”, (2007 Casa di Goethe Rome); “And remember how the devil is joking. Bernhard Heisig and Goethe's Faust ”(2009 Frankfurt Goethe Museum); " Franz Mon : word pictures. Positions of visual poetry ”(2012 Frankfurt Goethe Museum). Together with Werner Busch (FU Berlin), Petra Maisak curated the exhibitions “Transformation of the World. The romantic arabesque ”(2013 Frankfurt Goethe Museum, 2014 Hamburger Kunsthalle) and“ Füsslis Nachtmahr. Dream and Madness ”(2017 Frankfurt Goethe Museum and Museum Wilhelm Busch Hanover).

Petra Maisak has been a member of the International Council of Museums since 1982 and of the Goethe Society in Weimar since 1983 , of which she was a member from 1999 to 2003.
