Petras Rimša

Petras Rimša (born November 3, 1881 in Margiai, now Naudžiai near Vilkaviškis , Wolost Paežeriai , Vilkaviškis district , Russia ; † October 2, 1961 in Kaunas ) was a Lithuanian sculptor , graphic artist and medalist .

Life

His brother was the book holder Juozas Rimša . Petras Rimša studied at the Paežeriai elementary school . His father died in his youth. His older brother Juozas was deported to Russia. Petras Rimša lived in Vilnius , then in Warsaw , from 1902 in Paris . There he met the architect Antanas Vivulskis . This introduced him to Professor A. Mersje from École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris . Rimša took the sculpture exam and became his student in his workshop. From 1905 he studied at the Cracow Art Academy in Poland . From 1919 he lived in Lithuania, from 1920 in Kaunas, Berlin , USA .

His grave is in the Petrašiūnai cemetery in Kaunas.
