history

The roots of the Catholic parish of St. Marien in Eickel go back to the 1680s, when, after the acquisition of a building site in 1683, the first St. Mary's Church, along with the rectory, sexton and schoolmaster's house, was built on Herzogstrasse. In 1853 St. Marien was elevated to a parish. Due to the large influx of parishes, further parishes were formed. So first in 1890 St. Laurentius in Wanne , 1903 St. Barbara in Röhlinghausen , 1907 St. Joseph in Wanne-Süd and Herz-Jesu in Wanne-Nord and finally in 1909 St. Franziskus in Holsterhausen . Expanded again in 1866, the old St. Mary's Church experienced the last reading of a high mass on September 7, 1880, before the parish church, newly built at the same location on August 1, 1882, which had a 75 meter high tower and, due to its size, was also known as the “cathedral ”Was designated, consecrated and given to the believers. The drafting was in the hands of the Paderborn building councilor Arnold Güldenpfennig . The local construction work was carried out by building contractor August Franke from Wanne.

From 1928 onwards, underground mining activities caused increasing damage to the structure, vaults collapsed and walls thrown out of balance, which resulted in closure and renovation by 1930. During the Second World War , the church building suffered severe impacts on June 27, 1943 and burned out. The bells fell, breaking through five tower ceilings. Another air raid on February 9, 1945, during which US-type high-explosive bombs hit the ruins, damaged the masonry in such a way that it was blown open in several places. From 1945 to 1950 there was a greatly simplified reconstruction on the foundations of the old church. Essentially only the tower, which was just as simplified and renewed with a greatly shortened helmet, remained from the original building.

At the same time and following the construction of the church at the beginning of the 1880s, the parish had other buildings carried out. The building previously used as a school was converted for residential use by the pastor and a new school was built. Just a few years later this parsonage was converted into apartments for chaplains , before a new parsonage was built in 1900 and 1901 in the previous parish garden, viewed from Herzogstrasse to the left of the church.

This parsonage, which was last built, was converted in the period after the Second World War, in which it was integrated into the St. Marien Hospital as a day clinic. After a period of vacancy, the parish finally sold the building. On October 13 and 15, 2016, arson attacks occurred, which, in particular in the case of the fire on October 15, 2016, resulted in such severe damage to the building that stability no longer appears to be guaranteed.

Building description

The rectory, with its 10.8 meter wide north side, is roughly level with the middle of the parish church to the east on Marienstraße. The approximately 12.4 meter rear or garden side leads to Herzogstraße. The two-storey building, like the neighboring churches, was made of exposed brickwork and neo-Gothic style. On the southern gable side, at the level of the attic and framed by two windows, there is a covered statue of Mary.

The west and the east side obtained by a risalitartig early, and three window axes a special emphasis reaching section. On the east or church side, this risalit leads to a noticeable widening of the building in its rising masonry and also includes the main entrance on the northern, i.e. protruding front side. In addition to two window axes on the ground floor, there is another entrance on the west side, to which a single-storey garage extension was added after the Second World War. At the height of the attic, there are only two windows on all four sides. The gable side has four window axes each on the ground and first floor and on the north side on the ground floor, due to a single-storey, single-window porch, only one additional window, while the upper floor also has four window axes.

The parsonage was closed from gable to gable with a half-hip roof. The top floor has a second saddle between the two risalit-like projections on the long sides. This results in a cross from the top view.

The building was entered in the city of Herne's list of monuments on February 2, 1993 (monument no. A 344).
