Before the construction of their own churches, most of the hamlets in today's Häggenschwiler municipality belonged to the Berg parish . The hamlets of Rorenmoos, Weier, Schmitten and Gerschwil belonged to Bischofszell, Debeslehn and Ladhueb to Hagenwil , Atzenholz and Ruggisberg to Arbon and Stegen to St. Gallen.

The first foundation for 100 guilders to build a church was initiated in 1719 by Johannes Eberle. The project was realized years later. In 1727 it was determined that the church in Berg had become too small, it did not even offer space for half of the Catholics in its catchment area. Therefore the mountain people asked the prince abbot to enlarge the church. The Lömmenschwiler pushed for a new building in their own community. A new building in Ruggisberg was also discussed as a compromise between the two communities, but was rejected again.

Prince Abbot Josef von Rudolfis and his consistory decided on a new building in Lömmenschwil. This decision, as well as the replacement of Berg and the appointment of Johann Pfister as building director, were confirmed by the community assembly on March 7, 1728. Johann Pfister's diary provides an insight into the time of church building.

Jakob Grubenmann , who built the church in Egnach in 1727, was selected as the builder . The church in Häggenschwil was to become the first Catholic church that was built under his responsibility.

Stones from Neu-Ramschwag Castle were used to build the foundation and the church tower.

The first service in the new church was celebrated on the night of December 24th to 25th, 1728. The consecration took place on November 8, 1737 by the auxiliary bishop of Constance.
