history

The history of the pilgrimage church of Maria Bild began in 1676 in Máriapócs, Hungary . At that time, a local painter painted a picture of Mary for the local church. One day the picture showed tears that no one could explain. After this enigmatic appearance, the picture got to St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna fairly quickly . During this period the Cistercians were commissioned by Heiligenkreuz Abbey to take on pastoral care in the Raab Valley . To do this, they founded the St. Gotthard Monastery in what is now Hungary. In 1749, Father Gerhard Hauer brought a copy of the picture to Weichselbaum and hung it on a tree. Again and again he offered his prayer here. Not only he, but also forest workers and farmers paused in front of the picture. According to a legend, a woodworker carried it back down into the valley, from where it always returned to its original location. A small chapel was built to protect against wind and weather. The picture quickly enjoyed great popularity. Many pilgrims came to the miraculous image, some also settled here. Emperor Joseph II gave the Heiligenkreuz Abbey the order to build additional churches in the Raab Valley. As a result, the monastery in St. Gotthard (today: Szentgotthárd ) founded the German-speaking parish Maria Bild am Weichselbaum in 1787 in addition to the two long-standing parishes of Mogersdorf and Jennersdorf . The current parish church was consecrated in 1793. The tower was renovated in 1900, the interior of the church in 1940. The church was badly damaged in 1945, but it was restored after the war. In 1974 the church was completely renovated.
