history

Legend of Maria image

The original picture by Maria Pötsch.

In 1676 a Hungarian painter made a picture of Mary for the basilica of Máriapócs (“Maria Pötsch”) based on the model of Maria Schnee , on which one day tears could be seen. Due to this inexplicable occurrence, Emperor Leopold I had the picture brought to Vienna , where it was given a new home in St. Stephen's Cathedral (see Madonna von Pötsch ).

After the Cistercians of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey were entrusted with the pastoral care of the Raab Valley at that time , they founded the St. Gotthard Monastery . Pastor Gerhard Hauer was entrusted with looking after the Christians around Weichselbaum and in 1749 he brought a copy of the picture to Weichselbaum, which he had bought in Vienna. There he hung it on a tree so that he could offer his prayers again and again. Likewise, peasants and forest workers who passed by knelt in front of the picture. To protect it from rain and snow, pious people built a chapel, with which the picture received a permanent memorial. The miraculous image soon became a popular place of pilgrimage for the population; some even settled here.

Later, Joseph II gave the abbot of Heiligenkreuz Abbey the order to build more churches. The St. Gotthard monastery then founded the German-speaking parish and church "Maria Bild am Weichselbaum", which gave the place its name, in 1787.

Local history

Due to the Hungarian government in Budapest, the Hungarian place name Mariakép had to be used since 1898. The First World War also claimed its victims in Maria Bild. Eight men fell victim to the chaos of war. Like all of Burgenland, Maria Bild belonged to German-West Hungary until 1921 . After the end of the First World War, Maria Bild mit Weichselbaum was awarded to Austria on the basis of the treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919.

As a result of the " annexation " to the German Reich , Burgenland was dissolved in 1938. Maria Bild belonged to the Feldbach district , Gau Steiermark , until 1945 .

The Second World War claimed more than a hundred lives in Weichselbaum / Maria Bild. These, however, not only on the battlefields, but also as gypsies or opponents of National Socialism . After the Red Army had advanced in the direction of Jennersdorf and Fehring in 1944 , the population was evacuated to St. Marein am Pickelbach . On March 30, 1945 ( Holy Saturday ), Maria Bild suffered severe war damage. Artillery shells caused enormous damage to the pilgrimage church, the school building was badly damaged and several houses, including the farm building of the rectory , fell victim to the flames. The population suffered from looting and rape by Russian occupation forces . It was only when a Russian command post was established and some of the troops withdrew that the population returned to normal.

At the end of the war, construction work began and Weichselbaum / Maria Bild became an independent community again. The municipal administration was carried out by the Mogersdorf district municipality. Electrification took place between 1947 and 1950, after which water pipes were built.

After following the course of the municipal structure reform law , the formerly independent municipalities Krobotek and rose village was incorporated on January 1, 1971, The formation of the large village Weichselbaum.

After the damage caused by the Second World War was only sparsely repaired, the pilgrimage church was completely renovated in 1974.

In 1983, construction of a separate official building, which also houses the kindergarten, began in the Maria Bild district. This was completed in 1987 and given its purpose on the occasion of the 800th anniversary celebration. As a separate municipal office was now available, the municipal association with Mogersdorf was dissolved on January 1st, 1988. On January 1, 1990, the registry office and citizenship association with Mogersdorf was also separated, making the large community of Weichselbaum completely autonomous since then.

To the north there is a connection with Krobotek and Rosendorf via a municipal road.

Attractions

In 2013 the church was completely renovated at a cost of around 550,000 euros. The original color scheme of the church was restored at the time of construction. During the removal of color forgotten elements came to light, like the marbling of the cornices , the differently colored arches and the blaumarmorierten cassettes of the first arc in the apse . The existing ceiling picture of the origin of the pilgrimage was cleaned and strengthened. Furthermore, the high altar , the pulpit , all statues and the grotto in the side chapel were cleaned and the necessary restorations were carried out. The repair of the moisture damage in the church caused great problems. Furthermore, the entire electrical installation including lighting, loudspeakers and sound system was renewed. Ultimately, the defective tower clock was also restarted so that it strikes every quarter of an hour. The first mass was celebrated in the renovated church on December 1, 2013 (first Sunday in Advent ) with a family service . The Viennese artist Kurt Straznicky has been redesigning the church interior since autumn 2014 . The work was completed in spring 2015; the inauguration took place in July of the same year.
  • Pfarrhof - The rectory is also a listed building ( list entry ).
