history
The Henndorf area belonged to the monastery of St. Gotthard / Szentgotthárd from the Middle Ages until the basic relief in 1848 , but the settlement was not mentioned in a document until 1451 under the Hungarian name: "Erchene". In 1770 "Hendorf" consisted of 90 houses and was subordinate to the parish of St. Wenzeslaus in Jennersdorf.
In 1786 the geographer Korabinsky reported in his encyclopedia of Hungary : "Hendorf, Ercschénye, a German village in Eisenburger Komitat, on the right of the Laffnitz on the Styrian borders ..." A year later, in 1787, the village had 128 houses and 728 inhabitants. Henndorf reached its highest population level in 1890, when 1001 people lived in 148 houses.
After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and as a result of the treaties of St. Germain and Trianon , Henndorf, together with its surrounding area at Lafnitz and Raab , was separated from the previous Hungarian chair district St. Gotthard of the Eisenburger County and in December 1921 the administrative district Jennersdorf im newly created Burgenland. The independent municipality now dropped its Hungarian place name Ercsenye and called itself from then on "Henndorf im Burgenland". In the first Austrian census in March 1923, 761 inhabitants and 143 houses were determined for the community.
After the " Anschluss " and the dismemberment of Burgenland in October 1938, the political district of Jennersdorf was dissolved and its 33 communities were incorporated into the two Styrian administrative districts of Fürstenfeld and Feldbach . Henndorf came to the Feldbach district. At the last census before the Second World War in May 1939, the community had 732 inhabitants.
On March 31, 1945, Holy Saturday , the attacking Soviet units of the 27th Army advanced via Szentgotthárd , into the Jennersdorf region and occupied Neumarkt and St. Martin south of the Raab and Mogersdorf , Weichselbaum and Jennersdorf on the north side of the river . The whole section was mainly defended by the 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking" . In addition, units of the Volkssturm , the customs border guard and the Hitler Youth were deployed. In the following weeks the region, which had become a frontline area , was exposed to great devastation and the formerly organized villages were turned into fire ruins until the German Wehrmacht surrendered .
Construction work began in Henndorf immediately after the end of the war. However, the place and the country remained occupied by the Soviet Army until 1955. At the first census of the post-war period, on June 1, 1951, the municipality had 670 inhabitants spread over 138 households. Ten years later, in March 1961, there were 139 households and 574 inhabitants.
As part of the community reforms in Burgenland , Henndorf gave up its independence on January 1, 1971 and, with its 550 residents and 134 households, united with the localities Jennersdorf, Rax and Grieselstein to form the market town of Jennersdorf. Henndorf became an urban settlement on March 1, 1977 when Jennersdorf was granted city rights .
