The Francis wayside shrine is one of two listed buildings in Rax

Rax ( Hungarian : Raks ) is one of four cadastral communities in the town of Jennersdorf in the district of the same name in southern Burgenland in Austria . The place consists of the districts Rax-Dorf and Rax-Bergen .

The place has an area of 9.47 square kilometers. As of January 1, 2017, Rax had 651 inhabitants. Mayor is Josef Kropf.

geography

Rax is about two kilometers east of Jennersdorf and is a typical street village . The place Rax-Bergen is located on a hill about three kilometers north of Rax. In the east Rax borders on Weichselbaum and Maria Bild , in the south on Neumarkt an der Raab and in the north on the cadastral community of Henndorf in Burgenland .

The place is crossed by the Raxbach, which has its origin in the Rax Mountains and flows into the Raab in the south . The Raab also forms the border to Neumarkt an der Raab.

history

The area of the cadastral community of Rax was settled at an earlier time. This is confirmed by the numerous Roman barrows that are listed as historical monuments.

Until 1921, Rax belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary like all of Burgenland . After the end of the First World War , German West Hungary was assigned to Austria on the basis of the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919.

Until 1971, Rax was an independent municipality. In the course of the Burgenland community reform , Rax, together with Grieselstein and Henndorf, was incorporated into the town of Jennersdorf.

traffic

The district of Rax-Dorf is crossed by the Mogersdorfer Landesstraße L116, which branches off the Güssinger Straße B57 at the roundabout in Jennersdorf and leads to the Gleisdorfer Straße B65 in Heiligenkreuz in the Lafnitz valley.

The state road 146 leads through the district of Rax-Bergen, which branches off in Unter-Henndorf at the Hobischberg junction and leads to Maria Bild.

In connection with the Jennersdorf bypass, the members of the Burgenland Landtag, Ewald Schnecker ( SPÖ ) and Helmut Sampt ( ÖVP ), also called for a bypass of Rax for the Mogersdorfer Landesstraße. The construction costs for the two-kilometer section Rax are estimated at six to eight million euros. A planning contract was put out to tender by the Province of Burgenland (status 2014).

The Postbus route 487 Fürstenfeld – Jennersdorf is available for local passenger transport.

The railway line of the Styrian Eastern Railway runs through the area of Rax-Dorf, but it has no train station or stop in the cadastral community.

Attractions

  • Roman barrows - The "Birich" area is one of the largest barrow fields in Burgenland. The ancient cemetery dates from the 1st and 2nd centuries. It was discovered in 1873, and ceramic pieces were found in all of the graves, in some of which there were even completely preserved jugs and tripod bowls with lids. The barrows and their surroundings are under monument protection. The barrows can be reached via a circular hiking trail.
  • Franziskus-Bildstock - This is located about 100 meters after the Jennersdorfer roundabout on the left side of Mogersdorfer Landesstraße (L116) and is under monument protection ( list entry ).
  • Oleanderdorf - The Oleanderdorf is a new project of the Burgenland village renewal , the municipality Jennersdorf and the association Oleander Haus. The project was decided on May 13, 2014 after two years of preparation by the Burgenland provincial government and was funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development as part of the Leader program. 500 oleander plants were planted in 167 troughs and distributed on the main street.

  • Voluntary fire brigade Rax-Dorf - The Wehr was founded in 1923 and comprises 27 active members and 3 reservists. The commander is Gerhard Roposa. In 2010 the FF Rax Dorf presented the first erotic fire brigade calendar under the motto "Fire at the Wehr".
  • Voluntary fire brigade Rax-Berg - The Wehr was founded in 1924 and comprises 29 active members, 11 young people and 4 reservists. The commandant is Karl Kloiber. After the old fire station became too small and no longer met today's standards, but above all because of the poor building fabric, a new fire station was built, which as a multifunctional building also serves as a polling station and the beautification club, the hiking club and the water cooperative. After only one year of construction, it was blessed and ceremoniously opened on May 19, 2012. The construction costs for the building, which is equipped with the latest technology such as geothermal heating, LED lighting and photovoltaic equipment, amounted to around 400,000 euros. At the same time as the new fire station, a new town center was created in Rax-Bergen, for which Commander Karl Kloiber donated a marble fountain sculpture.
  • Hiking club "Turbomäuse" Rax Bergen - The club under chairman Johann Feutl not only offers guided hikes, but has also created two permanent hiking trails (each ten kilometers long) with "Rund um Rax-Bergen" and the "Stadtrunde Jennersdorf". Both hiking trails lead past the Roman barrows.
  • Association for Oleander Friends - The association is a sub-project of the Jennersdorf embellishment association and is headed by chairman Wilhelm Hufnagl. The association is responsible for the implementation and support of the Oleanderdorf Rax project (see sights ). The annual highlight is the Oleander Festival, which takes place in August.
