Viktor von Loßberg

Viktor Ernst Louis Karl Moritz von Loßberg (born January 18, 1835 in Kassel ; † May 24, 1903 there ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Viktor was a son of the Hessian lieutenant general and division commander Bernhard von Loßberg (1802-1869) and his wife Cordelia, née Freiin von Haynau (1812-1886).

Military career

Loßberg attended high school and was then a cadet in his hometown. On June 6, 1853, he joined the body guard regiment of the Electorate of Hesse as a porter ensign . There Loßberg was promoted to secondary lieutenant shortly afterwards on September 11, 1853 , and as such was transferred to the 2nd Infantry Regiment on October 12, 1854. Here he was from August 8, 1859 to November 15, 1863 Adjutant of the II. Battalion, then became Premier Lieutenant and rose to regimental adjutant. During the German War he took part in the campaign against Prussia in 1866, but without being involved in combat operations.

After the end of the war and the annexation of the electorate by Prussia, he was transferred to the newly established Infantry Regiment No. 82 of the Prussian Army . When he was promoted to captain on May 8, 1869, Loßberg was also appointed company commander. As such, he took part in the Franco-German War in 1870/71 , fought with his regiment near Weißenburg , Wörth , Sedan and Pfalzburg and took part in the siege of Paris . Awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class, he returned to the garrison after the end of the war.

On September 15, 1874, he was transferred to the Fusilier Regiment No. 38 and a year later he was promoted to major . Loßberg was a staff officer in the 2nd Guards Regiment from March 19, 1878 to October 10, 1879 and was then appointed commander of the 1st Battalion. As a lieutenant colonel (since September 13, 1882), Loßberg was at the same time in 1885 a member of the commission to assist the Minister of War in the inspection of the models of clothing and equipment for the infantry that had been received as a result of a competition . In the following year Loßberg was commissioned from February 11th to lead the 3rd Guards Regiment on foot and was finally appointed regimental commander on September 18, 1886 with the promotion to colonel . On September 19, 1888 he received the Order of the Crown, 2nd class. Ten days later he was placed à la suite of the regiment and charged with commanding the 36th Infantry Brigade . At the same time he was promoted to major general on October 15, 1889, he was appointed brigade commander. In recognition of his many years of service, Wilhelm II awarded him the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves, on September 19, 1890 . On December 15, 1890, Loßberg was put up for disposal with the statutory pension .

Loßberg had married Melly Toussaint (1836–1926) on November 15, 1865 in Hanau. The marriage had three children:

  • Otto (1866–1914), Prussian lieutenant a. D. and journalist
  • Fritz (1868–1942), German infantry general
  • Wilhelm (1874–1878)
